A MlemGirove slatmill set up on a hard floor in a home gym

Where to Put a Dog Treadmill: Carpet, Hardwood, Garage or Patio?

Short answer: put a dog treadmill on a hard, level floor, and don't run it directly on carpet. The moving track and the frame's feet can wear carpet pile, and a soft surface makes it harder to keep the frame level. If your only space is carpeted, put a firm protective layer, such as a rubber gym mat or an equipment mat over a board, between the carpet and the treadmill.

Can you put a dog treadmill on carpet?

We don't recommend it. Two reasons:

  • Carpet wear. The feet carry the weight of the machine plus a moving dog, and grit that works into the pile under the frame grinds away at it.
  • Stability. Carpet and padding compress unevenly, so the frame can rock. Your manual asks you to set the treadmill up on a level surface and to make sure every foot contacts the ground.

If a carpeted room is your only option, protect the floor and create a firm base: lay a rubber gym or equipment mat, ideally over a thin sheet of plywood, and check that the treadmill sits level and doesn't rock before your dog gets on.

Best surfaces for a slatmill

Surface Verdict What to do
Hardwood, laminate, vinyl, tile Best Use a rubber mat underneath to protect the finish and soften sound
Low-pile rug over a hard floor Workable Put a firm mat on top of the rug so the feet sit on a solid, level surface
Thick carpet Not recommended Add a rigid base (mat over board), or move the treadmill to a hard floor
Concrete garage or basement Good Check the slab is level, sweep grit away, and keep the area dry
Patio, deck or yard Fine for sessions Level ground only; clean the track afterwards and store it dry

Room by room

  • Living room: the most common spot, because you can stand beside your dog and supervise easily. Keep it clear of foot traffic and away from where children and other pets play during sessions.
  • Home gym or spare room: ideal if the floor is hard and level, and you can leave it set up.
  • Garage or basement: good for larger models. Keep it dry and ventilated, and sweep the floor, because grit is the main thing that gets into a slat track.
  • Outdoors: MlemGirove slatmills are built for indoor or outdoor use, with waterproof, rust-resistant materials. Use them on level ground, wipe the track down afterwards, and store the treadmill clean and dry rather than leaving it out in the weather.

How much room do you need?

Plan around the full footprint, plus space to stand beside your dog and walk around the frame:

  • Small: 45 × 17.7 × 35 in
  • Medium: 68.9 × 22.4 × 57.9 in
  • Large: 74.8 × 24.4 × 57.9 in

Setup checks before every session

  • Level and stable. Adjust the feet so all of them touch the floor and the frame doesn't rock.
  • Clear the area. Remove hair, stones, sand and other debris from the treadmill and the floor around it.
  • Check the track and brake. Move the track by hand; it should roll smoothly, and the brake should hold and release.
  • Cool and ventilated. Not beside a heater or in direct afternoon sun.
  • Keep children and other pets away while your dog is working.

Moving it between spots

Every model has front wheels, so you can lift the rear and roll the treadmill where you need it; the Medium & Large also have a U-shaped handle. The machines are heavy, so use two adults for lifting, and the Small folds for storage when you want the floor back.

Set up in the right spot

Frequently asked questions

Can a dog treadmill be used on carpet?
We don't recommend running one directly on carpet. The frame's feet and the moving track can wear the pile, and soft carpet makes it harder to keep the treadmill level. Put a rubber mat, ideally over a thin board, between the carpet and the treadmill, or use a hard floor.

What surface is best for a dog treadmill?
A hard, level floor such as hardwood, laminate, vinyl, tile or concrete, with a rubber mat underneath to protect the floor and soften sound.

Can I use a slatmill outdoors?
Yes. MlemGirove slatmills are built for indoor or outdoor use with waterproof, rust-resistant materials. Use level ground, clean the track after outdoor sessions, and store the treadmill dry.

Do I need a mat under a dog treadmill?
It's a good idea on any hard floor. A mat protects the finish, softens the sound and helps keep the treadmill from shifting.

Can I keep a dog treadmill in the garage?
Yes, if the slab is level and the space stays dry and ventilated. Sweep grit away before sessions, because debris is the main thing that gets into a slat track.
