Best Dog Treadmill for Working and Large Breeds: Malinois, German Shepherds, Huskies and More
Short answer: most working and large breeds need a full-length slatmill. The Medium suits dogs 40 to 70 lb, like Huskies, Border Collies, Aussies and many female Malinois, while the Large suits dogs 70 lb and up, like most male German Shepherds, Dobermans and big Labs. Weight gets you close. Body length and stride decide it: a long-bodied dog under 70 lb may still need the Large.
Why working breeds do well on a slatmill
- Self-paced running. A slatmill is non-motorized, so your dog drives the track. They can walk, trot or run flat out and slow down whenever they choose. There's no speed setting to get wrong.
- Room to stride. The Medium has a 59.1 × 15.7 in running surface and the Large 65.0 × 17.7 in, long enough for a working dog to open up into a full gait.
- Built for big dogs. A frame with a 500 lb frame load rating and a pin-hinged track of textured slats. The 500 lb figure describes the frame, not a dog-weight limit.
- Control. A disc brake with a track lock lets your dog step on and settle before the track moves, and lets you bring it to a controlled stop.
- Tracking. A built-in monitor displays speed and distance, so you can log sessions and build conditioning over time.
- No motor noise, no outlet. Use it indoors on bad-weather days, or roll it outside on its transport wheels.
Medium or Large? How to decide
| Medium | Large | |
|---|---|---|
| Dog weight | 40–70 lb | 70 lb and up |
| Running surface | 59.1 × 15.7 in | 65.0 × 17.7 in |
| Fits shoulder height | 13.8–31.5 in | 15.8–31.5 in |
| Fits body length | 19.7–33.5 in | 19.7–49.9 in |
| Overall size (L × W × H) | 68.9 × 22.4 × 57.9 in | 74.8 × 24.4 × 57.9 in |
| Assembly | About 30 min, 1–2 people | About 35 min, 1–2 people |
- Start with weight. 40 to 70 lb points to the Medium. 70 lb and up points to the Large.
- Measure body length from the tip of the nose to the point of the buttock. If it's over about 33.5 in, choose the Large even if your dog weighs under 70 lb.
- Think about stride. Long-legged, fast-moving dogs near 70 lb, such as a lean Malinois or German Shepherd, usually do better on the longer, wider Large.
- Check your space. The Large is about 6 in longer and 2 in wider overall than the Medium.

Belgian Malinois
The Malinois is the breed many owners have in mind when they look at a slatmill. The AKC is blunt that daily walks aren't enough for this breed: a Malinois needs plenty of exercise and wants to be engaged mentally and physically with its owner. Males (60–80 lb, 24–26 in) are often close to or above 70 lb with a long stride, so many do best on the Large. Females (40–60 lb, 22–24 in) often fit the Medium, but measure body length if yours is lean and long. Use the slatmill as one part of a routine that still includes training, play and time working with you.
German Shepherd Dog
German Shepherds are very active, and the AKC notes that a shepherd without enough exercise tends to get frustrated and pick up unwanted behaviors. Most males (65–90 lb) need the Large. Females (50–70 lb) can use the Medium, but a long-bodied female near 70 lb is often more comfortable on the Large. Keep sessions steady and build duration gradually, especially with young dogs.
Siberian Husky
Huskies were bred to run, and they need a lot of exercise. At 35–60 lb, they sit in the Medium range. Even a lighter female under 40 lb is typically 20–22 in at the shoulder, taller than the Small's fit, so the Medium is the right choice. Keep the room cool and water close by during sessions.
Border Collie and Australian Shepherd
These herding breeds combine high drive with high intelligence. The AKC says a Border Collie needs daily exercise well beyond a walk around the block, and does best with a job to do. Border Collies (30–55 lb, 18–22 in) and Aussies (40–65 lb, 18–23 in) usually fit the Medium. For both, pair treadmill work with training games or herding-style tasks, because physical exercise alone won't satisfy their minds.
Labrador Retriever, Doberman Pinscher and German Shorthaired Pointer
Labs (55–80 lb) are exuberant, very energetic dogs that need lots of exercise every day. Most females fit the Medium, and many males need the Large. Dobermans (60–100 lb, 24–28 in) are athletic and tall, so they belong on the Large. German Shorthaired Pointers (45–70 lb) do best with plenty of activity, ideally twice a day, and usually fit the Medium. Consider the Large for a tall male close to 70 lb.
Conditioning tips for high-energy dogs
- Wait for adult bones. Large breeds keep growing well past their first birthday. The AKC advises avoiding sustained, repetitive exercise until the growth plates have closed, which can take 12 to 18 months in larger breeds. Its Australian Shepherd guidance makes the same point: an Aussie becomes a good running companion once its skeleton is fully formed. Ask your vet when your dog is ready.
- Start small, even with athletes. Begin with the brake locked, then 2–3 minute sessions, and build over days and weeks. Our introduction guide walks through each step.
- Warm up and cool down with a few minutes of walking at each end of a session.
- Change one thing at a time. The AKC recommends increasing speed separately from duration. Use the monitor's speed and distance readings to track progress.
- Supervise every session. If you use the safety chain, clip it to a well-fitted harness, never a collar, as the manual directs, and never leave your dog clipped in alone. Stop at any sign of fatigue, limping or heavy panting.
- Keep the outdoor work. A slatmill is great for bad weather and busy days, but working breeds still need walks, sniffing, training and play. Read are dog treadmills safe? for more.

Frequently asked questions
What size treadmill does a German Shepherd need?
Most male German Shepherds (65–90 lb) need a Large slatmill with a running surface around 65 × 17.7 in. Females (50–70 lb) can use a Medium, but a long-bodied female near 70 lb is usually more comfortable on the Large.
Is a Medium or Large treadmill better for a Belgian Malinois?
Many male Malinois (60–80 lb) do best on the Large. Females (40–60 lb) often fit the Medium. If your dog's body length is over about 33.5 in, or it's a lean, long-striding dog near 70 lb, choose the Large.
What size treadmill does a Husky need?
Siberian Huskies (35–60 lb, 20–23.5 in) fit a Medium slatmill. Even lighter Huskies are too tall for a small-dog treadmill.
My dog is under 70 lb but long-bodied. Which size should I choose?
Choose by body length as well as weight. The MlemGirove Medium fits dogs up to about 33.5 in long, measured from nose to the point of the buttock. If your dog is longer, choose the Large, which fits dogs up to 49.9 in long.
When can a large-breed puppy use a slatmill?
Only gentle familiarization before your puppy is skeletally mature. Growth plates in larger breeds can take 12 to 18 months to close, so avoid sustained running until then, and ask your vet when your dog is ready.
